ITIN Services

An ITIN will serve as your identification number for filing your taxes. With certified tax professionals and Certified Acceptance Agents (CAAs), our offices are well-equipped to guide you through the ITIN number application or ITIN renewal process.

While the ITIN application or renewal process can be done with any of our tax pros, using a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) makes the process a bit easier. Why? With this service, offered at certain participating offices, the CAA will verify your supporting documents. And, because they’re verified on-site, your original documents may not need to be mailed to the IRS. Our CAA will submit copies of these documents, along with your ITIN application or renewal, to the IRS for you.

Your ITIN may expire before you file a tax return in 2021. All ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three years will expire on December 31, 2020.

You must renew your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to file your U.S. tax return if you or someone listed on your return has an ITIN with middle numbers 88, 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, or 99 (for example, 9NN-88-NNNN). ITINs with middle digit 88s expired on January 1, 2021. ITINs with middle digits 90-92, 94-99 expired on January 1, 2021, if the ITIN was assigned before 2013.

Note: If you received a CP48, an individual present on one of your tax returns in the last three years has an ITIN that has expired on January 1, 2021. For tax years after December 31, 2017, spouses and dependents who could have been claimed in previous years for the personal exemption are not eligible for an ITIN or to renew an ITIN, unless they qualify for an allowable tax benefit, or they file their own tax return. The individual must be listed on an attached U.S. federal tax return with the schedule or form that applies to the allowable tax benefit.

As a reminder, the IRS no longer accepts passports that do not have a date of entry into the U.S. as a stand-alone identification document for dependents from a country other than Canada or Mexico or dependents of military members overseas. The dependent’s passport must have a date of entry stamp–otherwise the following additional documents to prove U.S. residency are required:

  • U.S. medical records for dependents under 6
  • U.S. school records for dependents under 18 and
  • U.S. school records, rental statements, bank statements or utility bills listing the applicant’s name and U.S. address, if 18 years of age or older.
